About The Farm
The History of Fairfield Farm & Marriott Ranch
Set among the Blue Ridge foothills of Fauquier County, the land known for generations as “Fairfield” has long been a place of natural beauty, working agriculture, and timeless Virginia hospitality.
In 1951, J. Willard Marriott Sr., founder of Marriott International, discovered this remarkable property and was immediately reminded of his boyhood on the family farm in Utah. He purchased Fairfield and began a careful, hands-on restoration of the historic buildings and surrounding grounds. Over time, he continued to expand the holdings by purchasing neighboring parcels—including Fiery Run Ranch—ultimately shaping what is now the 4,200+ acre Marriott Ranch.
J. Willard brought Fairfield back to life as a true working farm. He began with a modest herd of registered Hereford cattle, added a large group of black-faced sheep, and developed the ranch’s equestrian roots through the breeding of Quarter Horses. An avid horseback rider and outdoorsman, he spent as much time as possible at the property and once wrote in his diary, “A beautiful place, hard to leave…”—a sentiment many visitors still share today.
At the heart of the ranch sits the historic James Marshall Manor House (circa 1814)—a landmark that anchors the Inn at Fairfield Farm. With its welcoming guest rooms, afternoon beverage service, and three-course breakfasts, the Inn reflects the enduring meaning of hospitality in Virginia horse country.
Today, Marriott Ranch remains a working cattle ranch—home to well over 1,200 head of cattle—while also serving as one of Northern Virginia’s premier outdoor destinations. It continues to be a retreat for family, friends, and associates, and it hosts memorable gatherings ranging from company picnics and executive retreats to weddings and social events—all set against a backdrop of history, open skies, and the quiet elegance of the Virginia countryside.
As this next chapter unfolds, a dedicated 60-acre portion of the ranch has been thoughtfully carved out to create the trail riding stables and riding experience—allowing guests to explore this remarkable landscape from the saddle while preserving the working spirit and heritage of Fairfield.
